Torah isn't in heaven—but science is

This write-up will show that the principle that post sinai heaven can no longer chime in on Torah only applies to inyanei horaah namely determining halacha and not matters that relate to ascertaining scientific phenomena which only indirectly affect halacha but are not halachic decisions per se and as a corollary that whereas Chazal are authoritative in the halachic realm their scientific knowledge merely reflects the scientific knowledge of their day The following well-known gemara expresses the concept that once the Torah was given at sinai judaism became closed to celestial input to the extent that even God Himself can no longer weigh in on the halachic process and that although the Rabbis may get it wrong from an objective perspective they still get it right

This is a short thought about how HaShem's will should be the sole arbiter of what is virtuous—even when we think we may have "religious" rationalizations to the contrary Devarim 32:48 with divrei Chazal (also brought in Rashi)

Which Bris made Avraham jewish

There is a well established approach within jewish tradition that pegs Avraham as the first jew. The precise event that triggered this momentous change in status is the subject of this exploration.   Avram's words of (bereishis 15:2-3) וַיֹּאמֶר אַבְרָם הֵן לִי לֹא נָתַתָּה זָרַע וְהִנֵּה בֶן בֵּיתִי יוֹרֵשׁ אֹתִי furnish R Elchanan Wasserman with proof (kovetz shiurim vol 1 358) for Rambam's opinion (nachalos 6:9) that by bnei noach only a son inherits, as otherwise Lot should have been the one standing to inherit Avram as his brother's son. R Elchanan then says that even acc to Ramban (vayikrah 24:10) that the avos were Jewish (for religious identity and inheritance matters), that only occured at the bris milah which only happened later on with Avram as of yet still a ben noach. Based on this he questions a midrashic statement quoted in Rashi (ber...

What does לקיחת אישה denote in the Torah

This piece poses a question on Chazals identification of a nuptial related term in the Torah based on biblical evidence that seems to indicate otherwise Jewish marriage occurs in two distinct stages, each with its own halachic implication. Chazal term the first kiddushin and the latter nisuin. Biblically they're termed eirusin and likuchin, respectively. (As an aside, on a biblical level, likuchin seems to be synonymous with marital relations, or followed immediately thereafter by it.) Contrast that with ibid 24:5 כִּי יִקַּח אִישׁ אִשָּׁה חֲדָשָׁה לֹא יֵצֵא בַּצָּבָא וְלֹא יַעֲבֹר עָלָיו לְכׇל דָּבָר נָקִי יִהְיֶה לְבֵיתוֹ שָׁנָה אֶחָת וְשִׂמַּח אֶת אִשְׁתּוֹ אֲשֶׁר לָקָח.

Can prophecies for good fail to materialize

The following is a question on a well known opinion of Rambam from an explicit pasuk   Rambam famously holds (hakdamah to peirush hamishnah) that the only way to test a new prophet's mettle is if he foretells good and it fails to materialize (with a carveout for personal communications, eg Yaakov being concerned that sin would disturb Gods past positive prophecy to him); if he foretells bad and it doesnt come to pass that doesnt disprove his claim to prophecy as HaShem relents should people repent (eg Nineveh).  Rambam says that it has got to be the case that there is a prophecy impervious to future actions as otherwise we'd never be able to determine a prophets credibility. Rambam reads Yirmiyahu 28:7-9 as supporting this conception, Rashi there explains the passage the same way in the name of R Tanchuma.  Don Yitzchak Abarbanel (ad loc) as well as R Yosef ibn Kaspi (Devarim 18:21) disagree, holding that just as a prophecy for bad can go unfulfilled due to an improvement...

Our actions: a mirage or effective

Devarim 8 beseeches klal yisroel not to forget who is really behind their blessings, ending with: Inside out or outside in

This piece attempts to resolve an apparent contradiction in Rashi's Torah commentary by showing how one of the passages was mistakenly grafted onto a similarly themed yet fundamentally different and authentic statement of Rashi's Devarim 10:1-5 (א) בָּעֵת הַהִוא אָמַר י"י אֵלַי פְּסׇל לְךָ שְׁנֵי לוּחֹת אֲבָנִים כָּרִאשֹׁנִים וַעֲלֵה אֵלַי הָהָרָה וְעָשִׂיתָ לְּךָ אֲרוֹן עֵץ. Rashi comments (to pasuk aleph) on the above mentioned ...
